Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is the primary provider of abortions in the United States. According to PPFA, it performed 329,445 abortions in 2010,1 approximately 27.2% of the 1.21 million abortions in the U.S. during that year.2
Breaking these numbers down, in 2010, a baby was aborted every 96 seconds at a Planned Parenthood clinic in the United States. Or, consider that every day during 2010, 903 babies were aborted daily at Planned Parenthood clinics in the United States.
As Planned Parenthood has come under scrutiny within the past two years, the number of abortions performed by the abortion giant has slightly decreased by less than 1%. Overall, the abortion numbers for the entire country have leveled off. 3
Planned Parenthood currently has 79 regional affiliates with 800 clinics in the U.S.4 In December of 2010 PPFA officials ordered all Planned Parenthood affiliates have at least one clinic performing abortion within the next two years. Non-compliance will result in a loss of affiliate status.5
In 2010, if a pregnant woman walked into a Planned Parenthood clinic, she was 392 times more likely to receive an abortion than an adoption referral.6 In that year, PPFA performed 329,445 abortions while providing only 841 adoption referrals.
According to Planned Parenthood’s most recent Service Fact Sheet, out of total services for pregnant women (adoption referrals, prenatal clients, abortion), abortion made up approximately 91 percent of services.7
Planned Parenthood reports its health services data in a manipulated fashion to underemphasize abortion-related services. PPFA states that abortion makes up approximately “3% of total services.” However, in 2011, National Public Radio clarified that a more accurate percentage of Planned Parenthood clients who have an abortion would be ten percent.8
While Planned Parenthood downplays its abortion statistics, it highlights its non-abortion services often by counting service to one client for several items as separate services.9 Such services as cervical cancer screenings and pap smears are laudable. However, because the count is manipulated the reporting, PPFA’s service numbers are not accurate and instead deliberately downplay abortion services.
While Planned Parenthood holds non-profit status, they are able to pull in a hefty profit each year. In the latest annual report, Planned Parenthood received $487.4 million in combined federal, state and local government grants and contracts, yet had an excess of revenue over expenses of $18.5 million.10
According to a 2010 federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) audit, PPFA reported federal taxpayer funding averages of under $100 million per year. The GAO audit showed that the federal government paid Planned Parenthood $657.1 million between 2002 and 2009.11 In 2010, state and government grants comprised almost half of PPFA’s annual budget.12
The founding of Planned Parenthood is directly tied to the eugenics movement, which had as its ultimate goal the elimination of certain groups of “unfit” or “feeble-minded” people.13 Black Americans are disproportionately the ethnic group who are having the greatest number of abortions.14
In a series of sting videos produced by Lila Rose, head of the organization Live Action, it was revealed that as many as seven Planned Parenthood clinics were willing to accept donations earmarked as abortion money according to race.15
Further “undercover investigations” by Ms. Rose suggest that Planned Parenthood has not been reporting statutory rape at a number of its affiliates.16 News stories show that these incidents are not isolated. In 2011, a series of Planned Parenthood affiliates have been shown on video being complicit in covering up child prostitution and sex trafficking.17
Planned Parenthood has shown support for gendercide. “Protect Our Girls”, Ms. Rose’s latest project that highlights gendercide in America, exposes Planned Parenthood affiliates in Texas, Arizona, New York City, Hawaii, and North Carolina encouraging women to get sex-selection abortions for unborn girls they do not want.18
Other criminal charges related to statutory rape and financial mismanagement have been brought against Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood in Kansas was charged with 107 criminal counts, including failure to report sexual abuse and falsifying documents in order to perform illegal late term abortions.19 58 criminal counts now remain, because the prosecution could not provide the falsified documents, which were intentionally destroyed during Gov. Sebelius’ administration.20 Planned Parenthood in Indiana has been accused of endangering the safety and well-being of minor girls by intentionally circumventing state parental involvement laws and breaking state law by refusing to report statutory rape.21 Planned Parenthood in Ohio was convicted of not enforcing parental consent laws in the case of a 14 year old who got pregnant from her soccer coach.22
This year, Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) released a report that details federal and state audits of Planned Parenthood affiliates from 1995-2009. Some states that are profiled are Texas, California, Washington, and New York. These audits convey how these individual affiliates were responsible for over 95 million dollars in waste, abuse and potential fraud, such as giving prescriptions without authorization from a medical practitioner and misusing government funds to overbill patients for family planning.23 Planned Parenthood in California was also accused of overcharging the state and federal governments by $180 million for birth-control pills, despite internal and external warnings that its billing practices were improper.24
Planned Parenthood promotes itself as a “non-partisan” organization, yet promises to turn out millions of votes and substantial financial support to elect pro-abortion candidates to the White House, Congress, and state governments, and works to weaken and overturn pro-life laws at all levels.25 Earlier this year, President Obama proclaimed his support for Planned Parenthood’s preventive services for women through a YouTube video he made for Planned Parenthood Action Fund supporters from the White House.26
